Mellunmäki Centre Development Plan
Helsinki City Planning Department and Helsinki City ATT ordered a reference plan from our office to base the development of Mellunmäki Metro Station. Later, HOK-Elanto and YIT became part of the project.
One of the goals of the project was to develop a distinctive identity for the fragmented and unpredictable Mellunmäki subway station. The plan consists of blocks on both sides of the subway and the future bus terminal, which forms an amphitheatre-like form, divided into two parts by the subway. The draft proposal based on the reference plan was approved by the City Planning Committee in December 2010.
The operational goal has been as versatile as possible: on the ground floor there are business and service spaces, above which are apartments and a secluded courtyard.
In the northern quarter, in addition to the usual housing, the service apartments and the ground floor are planned for HOK-Elanto´s store. There is a living block in the Southern Quarter, as well as a library and small shopping malls that depend on a store that can expand. There is connected access to the northern quarter from the adjacent light traffic bridges across the west bank. Both blocks have also been connected to the bus terminal. The parking spaces needed for both blocks, as well as the metro traffic are in the warehouse.
